Limitless

· without end, limit, or boundary

· boundless, unlimited, infinite, never-ending

These are compelling words we’ve all heard before. Maybe you’ve used them to describe the love you feel for someone, or maybe the energy with which your young toddler holds. The kind that’s almost unnatural as it seems to never run dry.

More than likely, you’ve used them to describe God.

·Psalms 147:5 says that "Great is our Lord, and of great power: His understanding is infinite."

· In other words, it has no limits.

But have you ever used these words, these powerful adjectives to describe you? Here’s where you laugh, shake your head, and think to yourself, “Me? Limitless? Yeah, right.”

And that’s okay. It was my initial reaction too. I mean, there are limits all around us, right? They’re placed on us everywhere we turn. The amount of sleep we get is limited to the time it takes that appalling alarm to go off in the morning. Everything we buy is limited to the amount of money we have. The time we spend with our friends and family is limited to the twenty-four hours we have in a day.

So, yes, literally speaking, we’re limited.

But maybe I’m not talking literally.

Maybe I’m talking spiritually.

Let’s back up for a second. Who remembers the tornadoes that caused Dayton, Ohio so much devastation? Though, the better question is: Who doesn’t remember those tornadoes? It’s all anyone’s talked about since May 27th, 2019. It was a tragedy. And we all know that tragedies, the heartbreaking, earth-shattering parts of life are always talked about more than the good. We find broken things remarkably more fascinating. What’s that say about the human race? When was the last time you’ve heard someone gossip about something good happening in another person’s life? Let’s face it, we have the nasty habit of talking about the bad more than the good.

Maybe we should change that.

The tornado was tragic for a lot of people. It shook our church while it held some of my family and closest friends in its walls. Their lives weren’t taken that day, but they were changed. I can still see it in their faces sometimes. When they walked out of those bathrooms where they sat huddling, crying, and praying, something in them shifted just as the foundation of the building did. It’s a lot easier to see the abundance of God’s ability after He’s just saved your life.

Maybe that’s why He allows us to go through tests and trials. He uses them to show us that the control isn’t in our hands, and if it were, we wouldn’t survive. And for that, I’m thankful. A lot of us like believing we’re in control, it makes us feel safer. Maybe even a little triumphant. But for me, it’s when I remember my life is in the palm of His hand that I feel most secure. My breath comes from Him. My heartbeat comes from Him. I come from Him. He’s the one who keeps us moving when the world convinces us we’re immovable. And if knowing that isn’t enough, remember that He’s in the middle of every single storm that strikes our lives. Every. Single. One. So, why do we fear?

In Mark chapter 4, verses 35-41, we’re told the familiar story of the disciples panicking on the ship, fearing for their lives as the storm threatens them. All the while, Jesus sleeps just below them. These verses are some of the many used to symbolize more than just a story.

The only thing the disciples could see were the looming clouds, the menacing strikes of lightning, and the crashing waves splashing over their feet. If you think about it, it’s reasonable for them to believe they were about to die. Everything around them seemed to be saying just that. But the disciples forgot about the most important thing.

They forgot about what they couldn’t see. Jesus was right there with them the entire time. He allowed the storm to come into their path, but He didn’t leave them to face it on their own. And it was only after they ran to Him frantically that He calmed the sea. He simply told the waves, “Peace, be still,” showing not only that He was with them, but that He had the control in the palm of His hand. The same place that He holds us.

Think about your storm. Whether it be financial struggles, health problems, anxiety, depression, or loneliness. Because the brutal truth is, we all have them. None are exempt from fighting these battles. Now, close your eyes. Stop worrying about your surroundings. Stop looking at your storm, because staring at something for too long has the tendency to make it seem bigger. Close your eyes and focus on the One you can’t see, knowing that He’s there. Believing that He’s always there.

The one who knows no limits is always there. Surrounding you. Filling you. Protecting you. Guiding you. Carrying you. So, if this is the case, if the one and only limitless God resides within you, doesn’t that mean the same limitless power does?

This is where this comes full circle. As humans, we’re not perfect. We make mistakes and often times find ourselves failing. But that’s how it’s supposed to be. Because we serve an all-knowing God who uses His own perfection to complete us. We get to call on His name when we come across inevitable limits. And He’ll come. He’ll grab our hands, raise them, and give us the boost we need to push past them.

Showing us that there are no limits, bounds, chains, bondages, fears, or failures that the simple calling of His holy name can’t break. Do you know what this means?

It means nothing is impossible. We’re limitless in Jesus name.

You want to breakthrough that addiction? You’re limitless.

You want to be a preacher? You’re limitless.

You want to start your own church? You’re limitless.

You want to save your broken family? You’re limitless.

You want to save your entire school? You’re limitless.

You want to reach your entire city? You’re limitless.

You want to reach the world? I think you have it figured out by now. You are limitless.

We’re limitless because HE is limitless. And every thought of the contrary is a lie.

So, the only question is this: Are you going to let that power go to waste, or are you going to use it?

It’s your choice.
